Nigerian director, Chinonye Chukwu, has become the first Black woman to win the Sundance Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize for her US dramatic entry, Clemency.
Chukwu was awarded the prize on January 27.
She is receiving positive reviews for the movie which touched on important social issues following its premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival.
Clemency is a gripping death row tale starring Alfre Woodard as a prison warden struggling with the emotional demands of her job.
The Rivers-born filmmaker was recently selected to direct the film adaptation of former Black Panther Party chairwoman, Elaine Brown’s memoir, A Taste of Power.
