Chairman/CEO of Chisco Transport Nigeria Ltd Chidi Anyaegbu has declined the offer to be named Mayor of Ndigbo, citing controversies surrounding the position.
In a statement on Friday, Mr Anyaegbu expressed gratitude for the honour but announced his withdrawal due to the politically charged nature of the title.
The event, which was scheduled for December 16 at Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, was to have notable figures such as Air Peace CEO Allen Onyema as chairman of the occasion and Obi of Onitsha Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe as the royal father of the day.
Dignitaries expected to attend included former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, former presidential candidate Peter Obi, business magnates Aliko Dangote and Arthur Eze and governors of the five southeastern states.
Anyaegbu however said he regretted the timing of his withdrawal, adding that it was not an easy decision.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude for the honor of being selected as Mayor Ndi-Igbo. It is truly humbling to have been considered for such a significant and important position,” he said.
“After careful reflection, I have decided to step back from this opportunity. Recent developments have brought to light the politically charged nature of this position. While important, it does not align with my personal mission of fostering peace, collaboration and strengthening bonds.
“This was not an easy decision and I deeply regret the timing. Please know that my respect for Ndi-Igbo and the unity of Nigeria remains steadfast, and I am committed to supporting its goals in other capacities.”
The Chisco boss also apologised for any inconvenience caused by his withdrawal, acknowledging the efforts of traditional rulers, religious leaders, businesspersons and diaspora attendees who made travel arrangements for the event.
Igwe Achebe and Ohanaeze Ndigbo earlier dissociated themselves from the event.
