The Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN), an NGO, has congratulated Mr Solomon Arase on his appointment as the new acting Inspector-General of Police (I-GP) by President Goodluck Jonathan.
This is contained in a press statement signed by Mr Chukwuma Nwanguma, the National Coordinator of NOPRIN, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NOPRIN is a network of 46 civil society organisations.
NAN also reports that Arase, who replaces Mr Suleima Abba, was until his new appointment on Tuesday, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of Investigation and Intelligence.
Arase’s appointment was contained in a press statement issued by Dr Reuben Abati, the spokesman to President Goodluck Jonathan.
Nwanguma described Arase as a professional policeman that can do well in the new position.
“Considering our regular interface and critical engagement with the Nigeria Police and its officers over the years, we can say without equivocation, that Arase is a rare breed and the type of officer the NPF needs to reposition it.
“He is a thoroughbred officer and a stickler for discipline and professionalism.
“We believe Arase has what it takes to address the problems confronting the police within the space available for any IGP.
“We wish him luck and hope that he will be given enough time to bring his intellect and professional disposition to bear,” Nwanguma said.
