Commissioners of Police in charge of state commands are now to issue permit for the use of tinted vehicle glass.
This information was released on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, in a statement.
Ojukwu said the development followed an order by the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, that the issuance of the tinted glass permit be decentralised.
Ojukwu said Abba has delegated the power to Commissioners of Police in charge of State Commands so as to bring service closer to the people.
He added in the statement: “Such permits have the same authority as those previously issued by Force Headquarters and are valid throughout the Federation.
“Applicants have to get their vehicles examined to ascertain the tinted glasses are factory fitted.”
Police authorities issue tinted glass permit on health and security grounds to applicants if they are so qualified. A release by former Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, in 2013 advised persons desirous of obtaining tinted glass authorisation to follow the following steps:
(a) Write a formal application to the IGP for the use of factory-tinted glass, stating the reason for use, bearing in mind that approval of such an application is predicated on health or security reasons only.
(b) Applications should be accompanied with the following:
(i) Photocopies of all relevant particulars of the vehicle.
(ii) Photograph of the vehicle.
(iii) Profile of the applicant with relevant background information.
(iv) Passport-size photograph of the owner of the vehicle.
(v) Any other supporting document/information that may help to justify the request.
Police ofiicers have however been collecting between N20,000 and N50,000 from Nigerians who wanted the permit.
