Olympic athlete, Oscar Pistorius, was Tuesday granted bail of under $700 by a South African court while he awaits sentencing for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
The 29-year-old was convicted of culpable homicide — the equivalent to manslaughter in South African law — last year for killing the law graduate and model on Valentine’s Day 2013.
An appeal court reversed that decision on Thursday and found Pistorius guilty of murder.
The double-amputee Olympian now faces at least 15 years in jail — a new sentence will be handed down at a later date.
Judge Aubrey Ledwaba set bail at 10,000 rand ($688) after defence lawyer, Barry Roux, told the court in Pretoria that Pistorius agreed to remain on house arrest but with “stricter provisions.”
Under the terms of his bail, Pistorius was given permission to leave the house where he’s residing between 7 a.m. and noon every day. He would only be allowed to travel within 20 kilometres (12 miles) of the home and would need written permission to leave, Ledwaba said.
At the hearing Tuesday, the prosecution said Pistorius may flee to Italy or Mozambique.
“We feel strongly about the fact that he needs monitoring, and should not leave the house at any time,” state prosecutor Gerri Nel said.
Pistorius is a six-time Paralympic gold medallist whose legs were amputated below the knee as a baby. He made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics, in 2012, running on prosthetic “blades”.
