Copycats: Six Nigerian covers of Adele’s hello

Adele’s ‘Hello’ seems to be spreading like high fever and almost everyone is catching the flu.

While voices like Waje, Tiwa Savage, Banky W, Darey Art Alade and Timi Dakolo have so far resisted the temptation to do a cover, others simply jumped on the bandwagon.

Even rapper, Vic O, has threatened to drop a version for sheer shock value.

Below are six Nigerian covers of the record breaking single so far.

Trust Nigerian fans, their response have been a mixture of anger and hilarity.

Omawumi

Singer, Omawumi, was the first to release her own version of the song. The cover, which was produced by E-Kelly, starts with Adele’s version but changes to a reggae mid-tempo tune at the first bridge. It met with positive reviews by fans.

Praiz

R&B singer, Praiz, also joined the trend and released an audio and video of his own cover. Being the great vocalist that he is, the X3M Music man is believed to have nailed the cover.

Ruby Gyang

Soul Singer, Ruby Gyang, would not let the trend pass without lending her amazing voice to the song. The Chocolate City star got mildly positive reviews. But there was an underlining expression of disapproval from fans who felt the covers were becoming too many.

Niyola

With everyone doing their version of Adele’s “Hello”, E.M.E’s first lady, Niyola, also did her own rendition of the single. This was one cover too many and the social media told her so in very clear terms.

Samklef

Samklef made news with his own cover after it got pulled down by video streaming site YouTube for copyright infringement. As a producer, Samklef twisted Adele’s original version to give it a reggae beat. Even YouTube had had enough of the assault

Dayo Amusa

Out of the blue, Nollywood actress turned singer, Dayo Amusa, dropped her own cover. She changed the song totally, choosing to assault her listeners in Yoruba. The song also features rising artiste, S Gee also known as Mr Sweet Melody, whose career might have been dealt a heavy blow with a contraption like this.
