Correctional service denies illegal detention of Patience Jonathan’s former aides

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Bayelsa State Command, has dismissed claims that 15 former domestic staff of Patience Jonathan are being held unlawfully in detention.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC I G.T. Isari, the NCoS described the reports, circulating widely on social media, as false and aimed at discrediting the agency.

The individuals, who are alleged to have stolen valuables from the former First Lady, were remanded by Bayelsa State High Court 1 and have continued to appear in court, according to the NCoS.

Isari confirmed they attended hearings on March 10 and 11 and April 3, 2025, with another court date set for April 17.

“The said inmates have been treated fairly and humanely while in custody, and their fundamental human rights are respected,” the statement said.

The command also rejected allegations of a secret meeting between Jonathan and correctional officials, describing such claims as fabricated and a deliberate attempt to incite public tension.

Reaffirming its commitment to lawful detention procedures, the NCoS maintained that no individual is held without a valid remand warrant issued by a court.

“The Medium Security Custodial Centre in Okaka remains one of the most peaceful facilities in the country,” it added.

The clarification comes amid rising concerns from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which is reportedly engaging relevant stakeholders to fast-track the lengthy judicial process.

Under the leadership of acting Controller General Ndidi Nwakuche, the service reiterated its ongoing efforts toward justice, inmate welfare and institutional reforms.
