Court grants Atiku’s son-in-law N20m bail

The Federal High Court in Lagos has granted N20 million bail to Abdullahi Babalele, son-in-law of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo admitted Mr Babalele to bail on Thursday with one surety in like sum.

The judge said the surety must be resident in Lagos and must produce evidence of means through an affidavit.

He also directed Atiku’s son-in-law to surrender his passport, which has been with the prosecution, with the court.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Babalele on Wednesday over $140,000 allegedly laundered during the 2019 elections.

Babalele was arraigned alongside a long-time lawyer of Atiku, Uyiekpen Giwa-Osagie, and his brother Erhunse Giwa-Osagie, on a separate charge of laundering $2 million.

They were all remanded in EFCC custody pending bail.

The court has begun hearing the Giwa-Osagies’ bail applications.
