Court orders psychiatric evaluation on woman for assaulting niece with hot pressing iron

A 32-year-old woman, Faith Ayegwalo, who battered her niece with hot pressing iron on two arms and forehead, was on Thursday sent to the Lagos State Social Welfare for psychiatric evaluation.

An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court gave the order in a ruling after Ayegwalo had pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of assault and causing grievous harm.

The Magistrate, Mrs Sule Amzat, also said that it should send its report to the court.

Amzat adjourned the case until December 18 for mention.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Dec.12 at Musa Adewokun Street, Ogudu area of Lagos.

Ihiehie said that the accused had been maltreating her 20-year-old niece, who had been living with her for some years.

He said that the accused beat her niece because she failed to pay N15, 000 she gave to her for tailoring school.

“The accused locked the door and battered her with hot pressing iron on her two arms and forehead,” he said.

Ihiehie said a neighbour reported the matter at Ogudu Police Station.

The offences contravened Section 170 and 243 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 243 stipulates a seven-year jail term for offenders.
