Court remands Ikeja tricycle riders’ chairman over ‘assault’ on police officer

A Magistrate Court in the Ogba area of Lagos has remanded the chairman of Tricycle Riders Association, Ikeja branch Oladimeji Ahmed for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Spokesman of Lagos Police Command Benjamin Hundeyin said Ahmed was arraigned on Tuesday for assaulting a police inspector who attempted to impound a motorcycle and arrest the rider for obstructing traffic in Ikeja at about 6pm on Friday, August 9, 2024.

The magistrate remanded the 48-year-old to Kirikiri correctional facility till the adjourned date, September 12, 2024.

In a viral video, Ahmed and a police officer held each other’s neck tightly as passers-by try to intervene.

Announcing the tricycle riders’ leader’s arrest on August 10 on X (formerly Twitter), Hundeyin said: “Oladimeji Ahmed, aged 48, Ikeja Chairman of Tricycle Riders Association, has been arrested for serious assault on police officer.

“Ahmed assaulted an Inspector of Police who attempted to impound a motorcycle and arrest the rider for flagrantly obstructing traffic in Ikeja at about 1800hrs on Friday, August 9, 2024. Investigation is ongoing.”
