An Ekiti State Chief Magistrates Court in Ado Ekiti has ordered the remand of human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi at the state’s correctional facility.
The defamation charges stem from claims made in Mr Farotimi’s book Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System where he alleged that senior lawyer Afe Babalola had compromised the Supreme Court.
The police prosecutor Samson Osubu filed a 16-count charge against the activist, to which he pleaded not guilty.
Presiding Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun directed Farotimi to submit a formal bail application and adjourned the case to Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
“The defendant is hereby ordered remanded at the Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti,” Adeosun ruled.
Farotimi was arrested in Lagos on Monday by officers from the Ekiti State Police Command and transported to Ado Ekiti where he was arraigned.
