An Igbosere High Court in Lagos has again renewed the arrest warrant against former Super Eagles captain, Austin “Jay Jay” Okocha, for alleged tax evasion.
Justice Adedayo Akintoye made the renewal Tuesday following Okocha’s repeated failure to conclude an out-of-court settlement with Lagos State Government.
State Prosecutor, Y. A. Pitan, told the court that Okocha had visited Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) office but failed to pay the 2017 income tax.
“The LIRS informed us that the defendant visited their office. He went there to reconcile accounts but has not settled yet,” Mrs Pitan said.
She also said Okocha had repeatedly failed to appear before the court to give reasons why he failed to pay his income taxes since October 5, 2017, when the case first came up.
The Lagos State Ministry of Justice had filed a three-count charge on the football star on failure to furnish his income returns and nonpayment of tax.
Okocha, who was not in court, was not represented by any lawyer either.
