Court summons ex-Kano gov Shekarau over disputed land donation

Ibrahim Shekarau

A Kano Upper Shari’a Court in Shahuci has summoned Senator Ibrahim Shekarau over a disputed piece of land he donated to an Islamic school in Sabuwar Gandu, Kumbotso Local Government Area (LGA).

The land Shekarau donated in 2021 to Imam Maliki bn Anas Watta’alim during the school’s graduation ceremony has become the subject of contention.

Despite the publicised donation, members of Shekarau’s immediate family, entrusted with the land, reportedly opposed the gesture. Allegations suggest that the family sold the land to a private individual, prompting the school’s parents and teachers to file a legal complaint.

The complainants have requested the court to restore the donated land to the school, citing a signed letter from the senator dated August 14, 2021, as evidence of his intent.

During a previous hearing, the presiding judge Khadi Muhammad Abdullahi suggested reconciliation as a resolution. However, the defence showed little interest in pursuing that option.

The complainants’ counsel Hussain Makari petitioned the court to summon Shekarau as the principal party in the dispute, along with other individuals mentioned in the case who failed to appear in court.

The court has now set December 17, 2024, as the next hearing date, with instructions for the respondents to be served summons before the proceedings.
