When the name Crime Busters is mentioned, the first thing that jumps to mind is a special unit of the military.
But that isn’t the case. Crime Buster is a football club based in Enugu albeit owned and managed by the state’s Police command.
The side has toiled in obscurity in the third-tier known as the Oriental Nationwide League One (NLO).
However, it wasn’t until last week that the national spotlight beamed on them.
Coached by force spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, Busters stunned serial Federation Cup champions, Enugu Rangers, to the accolade.
Record seven-time Nigerian champions, Rangers, had monopolized the competition for 35 years.
But their hegemony ended on Saturday as Busters triumphed 2-1 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
What this means is that the Police team, instead of Rangers, will represent Enugu state in the Federation Cup.
“My joy today is that we have broken the jinx of Rangers dominance in the FA cup over the years,” said Amaraizu.
“I must tell you this is historic because our team did not lose any match since the competition started. We have increased the tempo of the game.”
Chairman of Enugu State Football Association (FA), Chidi Ofo Okenwa, expressed satisfaction with the high spirit of sportsmanship displayed by the teams, saying “today, history has been rewritten in the competition, because before now, it used to be Rangers, Ranges, Rangers, but as you can see, new champions have emerged.”
