Chippa United have completed the signing South African goalkeeper, Mbongeni Mzimela, to provide competition for Daniel Akpeyi.
Akpeyi, Super Eagles reserve shot-stopper, moved to the Rainbow nation in 2015 but has struggled to hit top form.
Mzimela, 33, joins the club as a free agent after parting ways with Cape Umoya United before the transfer window closed in August.
A Chilli Boys official confirmed Mzimela has penned a two-year contract with the Port Elizabeth-based outfit on Thursday.
“We had only two goalkeepers registered with the club this season,” says the official.
“We have been searching for a keeper and fortunately Mzimela was available and a free agent.”
Mzimela was on the bench during Chippa’s 1-0 win over Free State Stars on Wednesday night, as he provided cover to Akpeyi at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Coach Eric Tinkler also has Veli Mothwa as an option in goal.
Akpeyi, who was part of Gernot Rohr’s squad to last summer’s World Cup in Russia, has been capped six times.
