Entertainer and social crusader, Charly Boy, has vowed to fight in defence of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in Nigeria.
He made the declaration in an Instagram post on Sunday morning, days after his daughter, Dewy, publicly revealed that she is in a lesbian relationship.
Same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Nigeria with maximum punishment in the 12 northern states that have adopted Sharia law being death by stoning.
Under Nigerian secular law, the maximum punishment for same-sex sexual activity is 14 years imprisonment.
“All that I have done for over 50 years of my life is to root for the underdogs,” Charly Boy wrote.
He recounted how he has fought for the right of commercial motorcycle (okada) riders and musicians in Nigeria.
“Now I reactivate my fight in defence of the LGBT community,” the 67-year-old added.
A master of mind game, Charly Boy has sparked speculations in the past that he was in a homosexual relationship with broadcaster and red carpet host, Denrele Edun, after pictures emerged of the two of them embracing.
Those close to him, however, know that he prefers women, especially those with “big bottom”.
His daughter, Dewy, said it took a while for her parents to come to terms with her sexuality.
“When I came out to my parents, it took them a while to adjust but my happiness comes first,” she said in an interview with Punch.
Since coming out of the closet, Dewy and her girlfriend have opened an Instagram page dedicated to their relationship and supporting the LGBT community.
