Comedian turned actor Mr Macaroni has demanded justice for Deborah, a female student, who was burnt alive by a mob in Sokoto State over alleged blasphemy on Thursday May 12
Deborah, a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, is reported to have described a message about Prophet Muhammad on a WhatsApp group as “nonsense”.
The group, it was learnt, was created for academic purposes.
A source told Daily Trust that the matter got out of hand after Deborah refused to apologise for her alleged comment on the post.
“She was asked to apologise but refused and this heightened tension in the school. The college security personnel had to intervened by whisking her to their office but they were overwhelmed by students, who later set her ablaze,” the source said.
Reacting to her tragic demise on Twitter, Mr Macaroni who condemned the killing of Deborah, also demanded justice for her.
He wrote: “Justice must be served!!! And it must be swiftly done!! If not, we would be enabling a society wherein religious extremists take law into their hand, kill and destroy. These acts should be highly condemned lest we add more tension and Chaos to a society already on the edge!!!”
“Nothing justifies the beating and stoning that eventually led to killing and burning Deborah. This is not how to practice the religion of peace. And If there are people who genuinely believe that she deserved such, then something has gone terribly wrong with our humanity.
“Every citizen has a right to life! No person or group of persons have the right to take the life of another citizen!!! You cannot kill another in the name of defending your religion. Do we all start killing ourselves in the name of religion?? It is inhumane and it must End!!!”
A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media. In the video, a man said in Hausa that he struck the match that led to the fire.
“I am the one who killed her; I burnt her,” he said, displaying a box of matches in his hand as others chanted “Allahu Akbar”.
