The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the incumbent and Lagos State House of Assembly candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Desmond Elliott as winner of the Surulere Constituency 1 election.
Desmond, formerly an actor, producer and director, polled 17,837 votes to defeat his rivals, according to INEC returning officer O. J. Fenuga on Sunday.
The Labour Party (LP) got 7,822 votes while the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Thompson Abolaji polled 1,045 votes.
It was gathered that actor and The Johnsons star Olumide Oworu aka Tari and another candidate Bode Adebayo were enmeshed in a legal battle over who has the rightful claim to the Labour Party’s ticket for the election.
Meanwhile, Desmond has thanked Surulere residents for returning him to the Assembly as their representative.
He said in an Instagram message, “Thank you Surulere, I commend the worthy effort given by other candidates in other parties: Hon Thompson (PDP), Mr Olumide Oworu (LP), Mr Bode Adedayo (LP).
“I’m glad for the youthful zest you put into the campaign. Please I am more than willing to work with you and share ideas on how to make our dear constituency a better place.
“I pledge to give my utmost best at giving succor and relief to my constituents to the best of my Legislative ability. Thank you Thank you Thank you. Suru wa a lere ooo.”
The 49-year-old also paid the Speaker of the House of Representatives Femi Gbajabiamila a thank you visit. Gbajabiamila has been representing Surulere 1 Constituency in the House of Representatives since 2003.
Desmond also thanked Gbajabiamila’s chief of staff Wasiu Olanrewaju-Smart for his efforts.
