Senator Dino Melaye has expressed support for the former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu who has been charged in the UK alongside his wife Beatrice Ekweremadu with conspiracy to harvest organs of a minor.
Ekweremadu has a daughter named Sonia who has been hospitalised and is in need of kidney transplant. Prosecutors believe Ekweremadu lied about the age of a male donor who was brought to London from Nigeria. They say he is 15 years old while Ekweremadu said the young man is 21.
Melaye, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) like Ekweremadu, posted a letter to Twitter dated December 28, 2021 which Ekweremadu wrote to the British High Commission in Abuja while processing the visa application of the donor identified as David Ukpo.
The letter reads, “I am writing in support of the visa application made by Mr Ukpo Nwamini David who is currently having medical investigations for a kidney donation to Ms Sonia Ekweremadu.
“David and Sonia will be at the Royal Free Hospital London, and I will be providing the necessary funding. I have enclosed a statement of my bank account. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require additional information.”
Melaye added in his tweet on Thursday night, June 23 that he stands with Ekweremadu.
“Sen. Ike Ekweremadu notified the British authorities on his trip with the said boy. I stand with Ike,” he said.
Another PDP chieftain Olisa Metuh declared support for Ekweremadu.
Metuh, a former publicity secretary of the PDP, wrote on Facebook on Thursday that Ekweremadu is a good man and will be vindicated.
“At times like this, you get a mob media trial. Even those who know the truth will keep quiet. IKE EKWEREMADU is a kind-hearted, jovial and humble man. He is a good man and God will vindicate him,” he said.
