As part of growing calls for action, Senator Dino Melaye says justice must be seen to be done in the case of Vera Omozuwa, a 100-level microbiology student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) who was raped and murdered.
The 22-year-old visited The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Miracle Sanctuary Mega Parish, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City on May 27 to study. She was said to have been accosted by unidentified men who raped and left her with head injuries. Ms Omozuwa died three days later in a hospital.
In a post on Instagram on Monday, Melaye wrote with a picture of the girl, “Justice must be seen to be done.”
Police in Edo have begun investigating the incident, following outrage on social media over the weekend.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, on Monday deployed additional “investigation aids and forensic support” to the Edo State Police Command to unravel the death.
