The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it is exploring the possibility of using the November 16 governorship election to conduct a fresh election for Kogi West Senatorial District.
INEC national commissioner in charge of Kogi, Nasarawa and Kwara States, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this in Lokoja on Friday.

Haruna said that since the governorship election was still 34 days away, there was possibility for the election to hold same day.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja had on Friday upheld the judgement of the National Assembly/State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal in Lokoja, Kogi State which sacked Dino Melaye as the senator for the district.
Justice Yahaya Dantijo, leading a three-member panel, ordered INEC to withdraw the certificate of return given to Melaye and conduct a fresh election within the time frame of the law.
Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election, Smart Adeyemi, filed the petition at the tribunal against Melaye’s victory.

Haruna, however, was in Lokoja for a workshop on fake news organised for media executives, journalists, and bloggers by the International Foundation for Electoral System (IFES) in collaboration with INEC.
He assured that the commission would be fair to all candidates in the election, but appealed for all to play by the rules.
