Director Daniel Oriahi’s The Weekend secures 16 nominations at AMAA 2024

Director Daniel Oriahi’s film The Weekend has bagged an impressive 16 nominations at the 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

The nominations were revealed on Wednesday during a ceremony at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos. The event was graced by key figures from the AMAA jury, the screening college, and the Africa Film Academy (AFA) board.

Hosted by renowned show host Vimbai Mutinhiri Ekpenyong, the event marked the start of activities for the 20th edition of the AMAA.

The nominations and award categories were selected by the AMAA screening college and jury members.

The Weekend received nominations in several major categories including Best Director, Achievement in Production Design, Achievement in Make-up, Achievement in Visual Effects, Achievement in Sound, Achievement in Cinematography, Achievement in Editing, Achievement in Screenplay, and the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) Award for Best Nigerian Film.

Other notable categories in this year’s AMAA include Best Documentary, Best Film by an African Living Abroad, Best Diaspora Short Film, Best Young/Promising Actor, and Best Actor in a Leading Role.

The 2024 AMAA, themed “Celebrating African Creativity,” is being held in collaboration with the Lagos State government.

Prominent attendees at the nomination unveiling included Mr. George Anyiam-Osigwe and his wife Chinyere Anyiam-Osigwe, Mr. Kennedy Anyiam-Osigwe, NFVCB Executive Director Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, actors Nobert Young and Segun Arinze, filmmaker Charles Novia, and many others from the Nigerian film industry.
