Dance critic and choreographer Kaffy has shared her thoughts on Alakada: Bad and Boujee, the intersection of Nollywood and music, and the state of the dance industry.
She spoke exclusively with QEDNG during the movie’s premiere held on Sunday at Imax Cinema, Lagos.
On Alakada, Kaffy praised the movie’s theme, noting its relevance in today’s social media-driven society.
“It is actually a topic of concern now that social media is driving the mindset of people. I believe there needs to be something to create a balance.
“We are all selling something out there, but don’t sell your soul or your authenticity. Be real, even if you have an alter ego, a product, or a character.
“You can separate the character from your life, but don’t let it drive your life.”
Discussing collaborations between Nollywood and the music industry, Kaffy expressed pride in her ability to serve both sectors.
“My industry is the greatest because I serve music, movies, fashion, health, education—anywhere there’s movement and communication, I am there.
“Whether it’s music or movies, I don’t have a favourite. There’s more demand for the elements we provide, and the industries are becoming more merged.”
On Toyin Abraham as a filmmaker, she commended her efforts. “She is doing exceptionally well. The competition is tough, but I think it’s healthy because the sky is big enough for everyone. The more these people push, the more our industry expands.”
Kaffy also addressed the state of the dance industry and her role in its growth.
“I’m not the only one representing dance, but I’m still one of the bigger voices pushing its capabilities in the economy.
Many people are still stuck in the hustle part of it—getting popular, getting endorsements. But there’s more to dance than just entertainment. There are other sectors you can pursue and have a fantastic career.”
She revealed her plans to celebrate her 25th year in the industry from August 6 to 10, 2025.
“It’s all about pushing the narrative of dance as an economic powerhouse. I have invested a lot, and every month next year, you will see the work I’ve done over the last 25 years to help young people become bigger and better Kaffys.”
