A 23 -year-old auto mechanic, Ibrahim Muta, who allegedly drove his car recklessly and cut off the leg of a refuse collector, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Muta, who resides at Olateju, Mushin, is facing charges of dangerous driving and damage.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
Magistrate M.O. Tanimola granted the accused a N100,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.
Mrs Tanimola said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, Police Insp. Aondohemba Koti, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 9 on Agege Motor Road, Olorunsogo, Mushin, Lagos.
He said the accused drove his car on the public highway in a reckless and dangerous manner and knocked down two pedestrians, Mr Gbenga Oluyisola and Mr Yusuf Aminu, staff members of Visionscape Alpha, while performing their duty.
“The victims were clearing refuse by the side of their truck when the accused who was under the influence of alcohol hit them.
“The accused drove his Honda saloon car without respect for other road users and crushed the right leg of Oluyisola which was amputated on the spot, while Aminu is still unconscious at the hospital.
“Oulyisola’s leg that was cut off was recovered the following day from the accused’s car,” he said.
The prosecutor also alleged that the accused drove without driver’s and vehicle licences and damage the compactor van.
The offences contravene Section 18 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2012 and Section 350 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The case was adjourned until June 4 for mention.
