A tanker driver and his conductor were Monday burnt to death as their 33,000 litres capacity diesel laden truck went up in flames along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway in Lagos.
Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
Fadipe said the tanker fell and caused a heavy spillage on the eight lanes expressway, which resulted in the fire outbreak.
He said the accident happened at Ijesha inward Oshodi, adding that the content spilled into the drainage, which made it difficult for fire service officials to put out the fire on time.
Fadipe said: “Two dead bodies were found in the truck after fire-fighting operation.
“The road side market at Ijesha was partially affected, while two trailers and the fuel tanker got burnt.”
Fadipe said six trucks of water were deployed by fire fighters to put out the inferno, noting that the incident also created heavy traffic on both sides of the road.
He noted that men of the fire service were able to put out the fire after more than an hour battle.
Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) and others were still trying to control traffic in the area as late as 8pm.
