EFCC intercepts men with N1bn cash in suitcases

EFCC-arrests-2-persons-with-2.8m

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Enugu zone has intercepted two persons carrying $2.8million (N1.02billion) cash at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

EFCC spokesperson Tony Orilade confirmed the arrest in a statement on Friday.

The suspects were arrested at the departure lounge of the airport on Thursday night while about to board an Arik Air flight to Lagos, the commission said in a statement.

Identified as Ighoh Augustine and Ezekwe Emmanuel, the suspects claimed to be workers of Bankers Warehouse.

The EFCC said the two men concealed the cash in two suitcases, containing $1.4 million each.

During interrogation, the suspects said they have been in the business of conveying cash for “some notable banks” for over six years and were in the process of doing same for Union Bank Plc, located at New Market, Onitsha, Anambra State when they were caught.

They also said that they had so far carried out such assignments “four times this year.”

Mr Orilade said they will be charged to court soon.

This development comes barely one month after the anti-graft agency arrested a Lebanese Abbas Lakis for money laundering offence.

Mr Lakis was picked up in November following intelligence report that he had on him undeclared huge sums of monies aboard an airline conveying him from the Kano Airport en route Lebanon.

Part of the currencies recovered from the suspect included cash amounts of $2.1million, £163,740, and €144,680 among others.
