The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim.
Spokesman of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that Anyim was being held over an “ongoing investigation”.
Mr Uwujaren did not give further details but media reports claim the Ebonyi-born politician was arrested for allegedly pilfering N13b Ecological Fund and collecting N520m from the embattled former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), on the eve of the 2015 presidential election.
Anyim, 56, was President of the Senate between 2000 and 2003 and served as SGF under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan from 2011 to 2015.
News of his arrest by the EFCC broke on Thursday, a day before the confirmation by EFCC.
He is the most senior government official to be arrested by the anti-graft agency.
