EFCC confirms arrest of Ohakim over corruption allegation

Ohakim

OhakimA former Imo State governor, Ikedi Ohakim, was on Thursday arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The 54-year-old was nabbed at his residence in the Asokoro district of Abuja.

Mr Wilson Uwujaren, the spokesman for the EFCC, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He added that former Gov. Sule Lamido of Jigawa was also being interrogated over corruption allegation.

“Ohakim was picked up by operatives of the commission at 8 a.m. from his Abuja residence.’’

He said the operatives had gone after the former governor following his failure to honour an invitation by the commission.

“I cannot say precisely the amount involved in the allegation brought against Ohakim but he was picked up this morning from his Abuja residence,” he said.

The former governor was later released to go back home.

A statement from his camp said he “spent less than five hours with the anti-graft agency before he was left to go home.”

It continued: “Chief Ikedi Ohakim who was at the EFCC office few hours past five pm, expressed surprise that overzealous officials of the anti-graft agency could go ahead to invade his house with paid media men in order to score cheap points and achieve some credibility stunts.”

Ohakim was Imo governor between 2007 and 2011.

His bid for a second term in office ended in defeat to incumbent Governor Rochas Okorocha.

Uwujaren told NAN that Lamido was at the commission for interrogation over contracts awarded to companies connected to his family during his tenure as governor of Jigawa.

“The two former governors are being interrogated at our Investigation Department,” the spokesman further said.
