The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano on its watchlist.
Mr Obiano, who is being protected by the constitution from criminal prosecution, is scheduled to hand over on March 16, 2022 to the governor-elect Prof. Charles Soludo.
The EFCC informed the comptroller general of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) in a letter dated November 15, 2021 to keep an eye on Obiano and inform it whenever he is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports, as well as other points of entry and exit.
Sources told Channels Television that the move was an indication that the agency may have been discreetly investigating Obiano for alleged fraud and money laundering.
The 66-year-old had left the banking system to join politics before winning the election to succeed former governor Peter Obi. He will serve out two terms come March 2022.
Obiano’s successor is a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
