The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is questioning the immediate past governor of Anambra State Willie Obiano over alleged misappropriation of N42 billion belonging to the state, a source in the agency told NAN on Saturday.
The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for being unauthorised to comment on the matter, said the former governor was being interrogated over alleged misapplication of N5 billion Sure-P and N37 billion security vote, withdrawn in cash.
Part of the funds were also allegedly diverted to finance political activities in the state, the source added.
The EFCC had on Friday transferred Obiano to its headquarters in Abuja following his arrest on Thursday.
Obiano was arrested at Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos hours after formally handing over to Prof Charles Soludo, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Obiano was on his way to Houston, Texas, US when he was apprehended by operatives of the EFCC.
Spokesman of the anti-graft agency Wilson Uwujaren told NAN on Friday: “The former governor is currently in our custody undergoing interrogation and I cannot say exactly when he will be released. I don’t know how long the exercise will take.
“All I can tell you now is that he is still in the EFCC custody in Abuja.”
