El-Rufai’s son reacts to allegation of looted public funds

Bashir El-Rufai

Bashir El-Rufai, son of the former governor of Kaduna State Nasir El-Rufai, on Thursday replied to a netizen who inquired if the ex-governor stole public funds.

Kaduna State House of Assembly recently called for the prosecution of El-Rufai, accusing him of diverting N423 billion and leaving the state in debt due to mismanagement.

A group known as the Kaduna Citizens Watch for Good Governance on Wednesday lodged a petition at the office of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), urging the commission to commence El-Rufai’s prosecution.

The same group had on June 20, 2024 led a protest to the Kaduna Government House where they made a similar demand for the arrest and prosecution of El-rufai and other members of the administration indicted by the assembly.

Addressing reporters shortly after submitting their petition to the ICPC, chairman of the group, Victor Duniya, said they submitted a similar petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja for the agency to expedite action on the prosecution of El-Rufai and others.

On Thursday, a netizen named Onye Spare Parts asked the younger El-Rufai in Pidgin English, “Your papa thief abi e no thief?”

The ex-governor’s son said he could not say for certain that his father was innocent of the allegations.

He said, “I can’t say I know for sure o. That one na between him and Allah. But I personally do not believe the father I know that raised me and my siblings is a thief. However, to each their own to believe as they wish.”

He then asked the netizen, “You, your papa na thief? Or him too na between him & Jesus?”
