Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, has alleged “pathetic and worrisome” situation at Medanta Hospital, New Delhi, India.

El-Zakzaky, who arrived at the hospital on Tuesday, in an audio message which has been confirmed to be authentic, said the Federal Government had frustrated his treatment in India.

El-Zakzaky departed Nigeria around 6:30 pm on Monday aboard an Emirate flight.

The IMN leader and his wife have been in detention since their arrest in December 2015 after violence that saw the army kill some 350 of his followers.

A court last week granted permission for them to receive medical care in India under Nigerian government supervision.

El-Zakzaky, speaking in Hausa in the audio, said he plans to return to Nigeria to source for a reliable and trusted hospital among countries that offered help like Malaysia and Turkey.

He said: “The hospital officials received us well they told us that they parked two ambulance vehicles, deceiving the crowd while taking us out through another way, saying that it was for our own safety.

“On getting to the hospital, we were placed under a tighter security situation worse than what we have been witnessed in Nigeria. We are currently more confined than when we were in Nigeria, worse than a prison setting.

“Contrary to what was agreed before our arrival, that our own personal doctors would supervise this treatment. Now they’ve changed the arrangement. So, we objected receiving treatment from strange doctors without the supervision of our own trusted physicians.”
