Senator Elisha Abbo was on Thursday interrogated at the Federal Capital Territory Police (FCT) Command for assaulting a nursing mother.
The lawmaker representing Adamawa North Senatorial District had come under backlash following the release of a video showing how he assaulted the lady at an adult toy shop in Abuja.
Mr Abbo, a member of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), first met the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, on Thursday at the Force headquarters before heading to the command for questioning.
The embattled legislator had wept and apologised to the woman on Wednesday during a press briefing he organised to address matters over the video.
Vice Presidential candidate of PDP in the February 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar, had advised Abbo to turn himself in to show example as a young leader.
The IGP had also ordered FCT police commissioner, Bala Ciroma, to carry out forensic investigation of the footage which showed Abbo repeatedly slapping his victim over what appeared to be a minor disagreement while a police officer looked on.
Mr Ciroma confirmed to The PUNCH that Abbo was questioned and taken into custody.
“We have questioned him and he is in our custody, but I can’t say if he would be released today (Thursday).
“It depends on the extent of our investigations; it depends on our discretion and how far we have gone with the investigation,” Ciroma said.
He added that detectives had questioned the assault victim.
