Chelsea remain five points clear at the top of the Premier League as they held on to beat West Ham 1-0 at Upton Park.
Having won the League Cup final on Sunday, the Blues were in confident mood and it was Eden Hazard who has the hero on Wednesday night as he hit the only goal of the game.
And it was an unusual strike from the Belgian wizard as he was the match-winner with his head, nodding home a Ramires cross after 22 minutes.
Their main rivals for the title, Manchester City also won as they dispatched Leicester City 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium, despite dropping Vincent Kompany to the bench.
Spanish star David Silva, who is enjoying his most prolific season ever in a blue shirt, scored in first half added time, following up his own rebounded shot to net his tenth goal of the campaign.
And James Milner made sure of the points with a late goal, assisted by Jesus Navas.
Elsewhere, Manchester United were handed a late win over Newcastle at St James’ Park as it looked like the two sides were about to muddle their way to a draw.
It had been a tale of missed opportunities with Emmanuel Riviere, who was also denied a first half penalty, Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini all missing excellent chances.
But in the end a horrible mix up from Mehdi Abeid led to Tim Krul skewing a clearance to the feet of Young, who fired in a winner one minute from time.
There was some good news for Newcastle, though, as Jonas Gutierrez made his first appearance for the club since his return from over 18 months out with testicular cancer.
Arsenal kept their hold of third spot as strikes from Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez helped them to a 2-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers.
Charlie Austin grabbed the consolation goal for Chris Ramsey’s basement battlers, who sit 18th in the Premier League.
Liverpool were also winners on the night as they beat Burnley 2-0.
England internationals Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge both got goals at Anfield as they remain two points behind fourth place Manchester United.
And Tottenham, who sit seventh, also claimed a win, beating Swansea City 3-2 in north London.
Nacer Chadli volleyed the Lilywhites ahead after seven minutes as they looked to banish any signs of League Cup final hangover.
The game was then halted for a number of minutes when Bafetimbi Gomis collapsed in the middle of the pitch before being stretchered off after appearing to faint.
When play resumed Swansea quickly found themselves level with Ki Sung-Yueng firing home from a narrow angle after Gylfi Sigurdsson’s free-kick had hit the post.
But in the end it was Spurs’ homegrown heroes who were the stars at White Hart Lane as Ryan Mason thundered a Christian Eriksen pass beyond Lukasz Fabianski to hand them the lead again.
And Andros Townsend finished the scoring for the hosts as he sped into the penalty and lashed home after cutting in from the left-hand side of the box.
A late Gylfi Sigurdsson strike made Spurs sweat but Mauricio Pochettino’s side had done enough to claim the spoils.
Meanwhile, in the night’s other match Stoke City heaped misery upon Everton as they ran out 2-0 winners.
Mark Hughes’ men were a goal to the good on the half-hour mark when Nigerian Victor Moses nodded Phil Bardsley’s right-wing centre beyond Tim Howard.
And Mame Biram Diouf got the second six minutes from the final whistle, stabbing home when Marko Arnautovic’s strike cannoned back off the upright.
