Poland became the first team to book their place in the quarter finals of Euro 2016 courtesy of a penalty shoot-out victory over Switzerland on Saturday afternoon.
The Polish began far the brighter of the two sides and could have gone in front within a minute but Arkadiusz Milik drove an effort high over the bar after Yann Sommer had been forced into a mistake by Robert Lewandowski.
The Swiss struggled to get a foothold in the game with Haris Seferovic starved of service and fell behind six minutes before the break when Jakub Blaszczykowski found himself on the end of a flowing counter attack and slotted home.
Switzerland returned from the break with the bit between their teeth but it did not appear to be their day when Lukasz Fabianski produced a stunning save to tip Ricardo Rodriguez’s effort over the bar.
The Swansea goalkeeper was in inspired form but was eventually beaten by a stunning individual strike by Xherdan Shaqiri.
The Stoke City man flung himself into the air and unleashed a gorgeous overhead kick from the edge of the penalty area, which cannoned in off the inside of the post.
The strike, which was good enough to win any game, only took the encounter into extra time.
The teams were unable to be split during an additional 30 minutes and new Arsenal signing Granit Xhaka was the unlucky man who fluffed his lines during the shoot-out out.
Poland scored all five of their attempts with Grzegorz Krychowiak providing the final touch to send his country into the latter stages, where they will face either Wales or Northern Ireland.
