Former Nigeria international, Pius Ikedia, miraculously escaped death on Saturday while in action in an exhibition game in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The 36-year-old who spent six years at Dutch giants, Ajax Amsterdam, once again donned the jersey of the Sons of God as part of events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Haarlo Sports.
Ikedia, a pacy winger, who spent a bulk of his club career in the Netherlands, shockingly slumped in the friendly forcing the game to be stopped with the Ajax side leading 7-2.
Several attempts were made to revive the Nigerian who surprisingly responded before being rushed to a hospital.
“It was a close shave with death for Pius,” a teammate told Dutch newspaper, Telegraaf.
“We only thank God that with proper care, we were not celebrating the death of another Nigeria football star on the pitch.”
Ikedia stormed into limelight as a 19-year-old who featured for Nigeria at the FIFA U20 World Cup hosted by the country.
He represented the African nation at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and also made the squad to the 2002 World Cup.
The petit winger quit the game in 2012 but remained in Amsterdam ever since where he settled with his family.
