President Bola Tinubu is set to host Nigerian-born NFL star Moro Ojomo following the latter’s Super Bowl victory with the Philadelphia Eagles, QEDNG has learnt.
Ojomo, a defensive tackle, played a pivotal role in the Eagles’ 40-22 triumph over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on February 9, 2025.
He celebrated the victory with a display of the Nigerian flag.
Ojomo’s return to Nigeria will include a series of events aimed at engaging with young athletes and sports enthusiasts to motivate and encourage the next generation of Nigerian sports talents.
“The homecoming aims to honour Ojomo’s outstanding achievement and to inspire young Nigerians by showcasing the heights that can be reached through dedication and hard work,” a Presidency source privy to the planned visit told this online newspaper.
As part of his visit to Nigeria, Ojomo will meet with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) Abike Dabiri-Erewa.
“These meetings will further highlight his achievements and provide a platform to engage with the government on how Nigerian athletes abroad can contribute to national development,” the source continued.
The visit is planned to take place before Ramadan, with the exact date expected to be confirmed after President Tinubu returns from the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union (AU) Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Governor Sanwo-Olu had earlier expressed pride in Ojomo’s accomplishments, describing his journey as a testament to resilience and determination.
“Congratulations to Morotoluwa Ojomo, a proud Lagos-born talent, for becoming a Super Bowl Champion with the Philadelphia Eagles!
“Your journey from Lagos to the NFL exemplifies resilience, determination, and unmatched talent. You’ve made Lagos and Nigeria proud on the global stage.
“As you continue to shine on and off the field, know that Lagos stands proudly with you. Your achievements inspire countless others, proving that Lagosians’ potential is limitless,” Sanwo-Olu wrote in a message on X on February 10.
“Moro Ojomo was born in Lagos, Nigeria before his family moved to California in 2009.
“He brought out the Nigerian flag after winning the Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles last night. #ProudlyNigerian,” Mrs Dabiri-Erewa also wrote on X on February 10.
Born in Lagos, Moro Ojomo moved to the United States at the age of seven. After a standout college career at the University of Texas, Ojomo was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. His rookie season culminated in a Super Bowl victory, marking a historic milestone for the 23-year-old athlete.
