The blast went off at the School of Hygiene and the spokesperson of the Kano State Police Command, Magaji Majiya, immediately confirmed the blast.
According to him, details of the unpleasant incident were not immediately known but he added that the State Commissioner of Police, Adenrele Shinaba, and other top officers were on ground at the scene of the blast.
Majiya said the area had been cordoned off while the commissioner was expected to address the media.
Shinaba later said the blast occurred at about 2:05pm.
The School of Hygiene is located along Bayero University Kano (BUK) Road in Kano which has suffered similar attacks in the past.
Addressing reporters at the scene of the blast, Shinaba also said several others were injured and have been taken to the hospitals for treatment. He also said one suspect was arrested in connection with the blast.
He said further information will be provided in the course of the investigation of the incident.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blast although the insurgent Boko Haram has carried out similar attacks in Kano and other northern states.
