Former presidential candidate, Oby Ezekwesili, has hailed the revolution ongoing in the North African countries of Sudan and Algeria.
Days of non-stop protests forced Sudanese President, Omar Al-Bashir, to resign his position on Thursday after 30 years in power.
Abdelaziz Bouteflika, last week, stepped down as Algerian President after 20 years in power following weeks of protests.
The country’s interim president, Abdelkader Bensalah, announced on Wednesday that a fresh presidential election would be conducted on July 4.
Ezekwesili, in a tweet on Thursday, said she was joyful that “nothing and no one can stop a people who finally decide to be free and take the action necessary for Freedom.”
She added that she wished Nigerians would take up same position.
“Until Nigerians are ready…… we who have raised our Voice against poor governance waste our time. Until Nigerians are ready…. those who oppress them will remain their heroes. You cannot save a people who are not ready. I know that to be so. Until then,” Ezekwesili wrote.
Former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, also in a tweet on Thursday said: “Algeria, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, now Sudan: a new mood music in military & authoritarian ouster is taking shape – force strong men to resign.”
