The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has responded to a viral video of power outage at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Power went off at the airport for some minutes on February 2.
A video recorded by an unidentified man who was at the airport at the time immediately went viral. The man claimed he was at the airport to catch his flight to the United States.
He criticised the Nigerian government for the incident, saying it was a “disgrace”.
Reacting to the video which has seen FAAN receive backlash from the general public, the agency’s managing director and chief executive officer Olubunmi Kuku said on X on Saturday night that it was an “unexpected hiccup”.
“We regret the power outage that occured at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, on February 2, 2024. We had an unexpected hiccup when we tried to switch to our backup power supply & automatic switchover had a little trouble,” Mrs Kuku wrote.
Why we relocated headquarters to Lagos – FAAN
Ethiopian Airlines banned Ghana-Must-Go bags from flights, not us – FAAN
“Our electrical team is working hard to get this sorted. We have a plan in place to enable us tap into alternative power sources to avoid any future mishaps.”
The agency said on its X handle that it was a “2-3 minute outage…while switching over to our back up power supply after losing power from the Grid.”
This comes amid the relocation of FAAN headquarters from Abuja to Lagos by the minister of aviation and aerospace development Festus Keyamo.
