Falz promises to contend sentence of singer jailed for insulting Ganduje

Rapper, Falz, has promised to contend the two-year sentence handed to Kano singer, Mohammed Yussuf, for singing a song insulting Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

The 28-year-old musician made this known in an Instagram post on Monday.

“HATE to see stuff like this! This is 2019. Any individual who feels defamed by any statement made by another person can sue for libel or slander under the law of defamation. It is shameful to see public officers using the machinery of the state to harass citizens and attempting to hinder our inalienable freedom of expression.

“Anyone who knows the musician Mohammed Yusuf personally should please get in touch with me. We NEED to contend this unjust sentence. #JusticeForMohammed,” he wrote.

According to the magistrate court, Mohammed Yussuf is guilty of three offences, namely singing without permission from Kano censors board, shooting video without permission and abusing Governor Ganduje.

The lyrics of the song described the governor as liking money more than a thief.

The video shows only back and side views of the singer, making it difficult to immediately determine who the singer was.

For the first two offences for which AGY was sentenced to serve one year in jail, he has an option to pay N100,000 fine but the abuse of Ganduje carries a jail term of one year jail time without an option of fine.

AGY was arrested on Tuesday days after the police had wrongfully arrested another musician, Sanusi Abdullahi, better known as SK, thinking he was the one that sang the song.
