Former minister of aviation Femi Fani-Kayode has advised US President Donald Trump to accept the result of the November election won by former Vice President Joe Biden.
Mr Fani-Kayode has been very vocal in his support for US President Donald Trump. He also joined in pushing the narrative that the US election was rigged in favour of Mr Biden.
However, following Wednesday’s invasion of the Capitol by Trump supporters where the Congress was meeting to certify Biden’s win, Mr Fani-Kayode called for an end to violence and urged Mr Trump to concede defeat.
He drew comparison with the manner former President Goodluck Jonathan conceded to President Muhammadu Buhari after the 2015 election in Nigeria.
“As much as I love Donald Trump and believe that he was cheated out of the election I will not support any action from his supporters that would disturb the peace, jeopardise life and property or lead to a civil war in America,” he wrote on Thursday in a post on social media platforms.
The controversial politician said Trump, like Jonathan, should maintain the peace for the sake of all.
“In 2015 he (Jonathan) was robbed and rigged out of the election too but he refused to urge his supporters to indulge in violence, he conceded his right to fight till the end and he put the peace, safety and security of the Nigerian people first.”
“Those of us that love and believe in him fought a good fight and stood firm, regardless of the odds and the insults, right to the end. It is time to accept the reality of a Biden presidency and move on.”
The ex-minister said it was time to emulate great men like Nigeria’s former President Goodluck Jonathan who conceded defeat in 2015 to Muhammadu Buhari.
“I have no doubt that after a few years, just as it was with Jonathan, Trump will be vindicated but he will lose that opportunity if he refuses to accept the final decision of Congress and the Electors and concede the election,” he added.
