Nigerians have taken to Twitter to share fond memories of Afrobeat legend, the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, after the historic visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to the New Afrika Shrine on Tuesday.
The excited fans, who shared notes on Fela’s musical prowess, appreciated his relevance and international repute, even after death.
Fela was a legendary multi-instrumentalist, musician, and composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre, human rights activist and political maverick.
Fans analysed the importance of Fela’s sound and the honour of Macron’s visit as the French president becomes the first president to enter the Afrika Shrine.
If President Emmanuel Macron could visit the Afrika Shrine in Lagos to #CelebrateAfricanCulture, then truly, we are yet to really understand and appreciate the value of Fela!
Pele is considered a National Asset in Brazil.
What have we done with Fela?
Fela is enough tourism!

Tomorrow @MBuhari will use President Emmanuel Macron’s visit for campaign.
Let it be known that Macron visited because of Fela. The man Buhari accused of arm robbery and jailed.
Nigeria please wake up. Wake please. We deserve better. #CelebrateAfricanCulture @Gidi_Traffic

Every time I see Govts honour Fela, I chuckle to myself and wish I could be in the room and ask with the utmost seriousness and stentorian voice of a British parliamentarian:
“are you sir recommending Fela to younger generations as a role model?”
Cos it’s really quite funny.

A bit of time being spent talking about the New Afrika Shrine, at this press conference 😊
President @EmmanuelMacron namechecks Fela, Femi and Seun Kuti, says they’re very well-known in France. Also says he has fond memories of the Shrine from when he lived in Nigeria. pic.twitter.com/nhCdxENCRT— tolu ogunlesi (@toluogunlesi) July 3, 2018

“Fela was not just a musician. He was a politician who wanted to change society. So if I have one message for young people, it’s this: ‘Yes, politics is important; yes, be involved,” @EmmanuelMacron #ReadyToRun pic.twitter.com/UCEaapZDFV
