Ex-Super Eagles skipper, Nwankwo Kanu will take part in the official draw for the FIFA U17 World Cup.
Kanu was handed a special invitation by world apex body, FIFA, alongside Argentina legend, Esteban Cambiasso, for Friday’s event in India.
The 40-year-old former Arsenal goal poacher confirmed his invite via Instagram on Thursday.
Kanu and Cambiasso are no strangers to the cadre tourney.
While Kanu held the Winner’s Trophy aloft with the Golden Eaglets in 1993, Cambiasso participated in the 1995 edition.
The young Kanu would go on to lead his country to another global recognition three years later – this time gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.
This paved way for greater success for the forward who played for top European sides, Arsenal, Inter Milan and Ajax winning several laurels among which both UEFA club competitions.
“The FIFA U-17 World Cup 1993 really spurred my career – within years of winning the title, I won the Olympic gold and from there, as I would like to believe, there wasn’t any looking back,” Kanu recalled.
“This tournament provides youngsters with the necessary stage for development and I believe this year’s edition will provide us all with exceptional talent – much like the previous tournaments.”
The two football icons will be joined by local legends Sunil Chhetri and PV Sindhu, who will take part as draw assistants.
But unlike previous years, record champions, Nigeria, will be missing from the draw.
