Musician Banky W has joined the People’s Democracy Party (PDP) to contest for the Eti-Osa federal constituency, Lagos at the House of Representatives.
The singer-turned-politician announced on Friday via Instagram that he would officially declare his interest in the seat on Saturday.
Banky W had, however, described PDP and All Progressives Congress (APC) in August 2021 as parties that lack ideologies.
He said, “The battle in Nigeria is not between APC and PDP, it’s between the political class and everybody else because APC and PDP tend to be the same. Their members are just jumping back and forth, and the parties don’t have ideologies per se, they are just platforms that people use to leapfrog into power.
“So, there was that frustration with the political status quo. Also, wanting to stand up for something, represent a different set of ideas, and reach out to the younger generation that does not believe in either of those two platforms, to try and put ourselves together and push back against these things to show what is possible and what can be done.”
Born Olubankole Wellington, the 41-year-old had contested the seat in 2019 on the platform of the Modern Democratic Party (MDP). Babajide Obanikoro of the All Progressive Congress (APC) won the election.
Clearing misconceptions it was not another April Fool’s Day joke, Banky said in another Instagram post, “I know this is April Fool’s Day, but this is not a joke.
“We must engage with Nigeria where it is, not where we prefer for it to be. We must no longer be content to shout from the sidelines. We must get into the system to fix it.
“In 2019, we planted the seed. In 2023, by the grace of God, and with your support, we will win the seat. The time for just talking about our problems is over.”
