A former presidential candidate Oby Ezekwesili has discredited the rumour that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) summoned officials of a fintech company Flutterwave which has become the go-to place for crowdfunding to help the #EndSARS victims.
The rumour spread on social media on Tuesday, with several public figures criticising the CBN governor Godwin Emefiele for the alleged move.
However, Mrs Ezekwesili tweeted she was happy the rumour was false.
“#Update I could not imagine such lowliest of lowliest actions against one of our top FinTech @theflutterwave companies entirely built by our young generation who don’t need the usual government patronage to thrive,” she wrote.
“I said Naaaa. It cannot be. Glad to see that it is not true.”
Author and political commentator Japheth Omojuwa also confirmed it was false.
“I have now been informed that government isn’t shutting Flutterwave down,” he wrote.
“So we are clear on that. No one is shutting Flutterwave down. They will reset the donation link and get things going again. We are good.”
As of October 11, more than $26, 000 had been raised through Flutterwave.
The company which was founded in 2014 by Iyinoluwa Aboyeji and Olugbenga Agboola is headquartered in the United States.
