Former Delta governor, Felix Ibru, dies at 80

The first Executive Governor of Delta State and one-time Senator of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Olorogun Felix Ibru, has died at the age of 80.

Family sources said he died in Lagos after a brief illness.

Until his death, Ibru was the President General of the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU).

Born on December 7, 1935 in Agbarha-Otor, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State to Chief Peter Epete Ibru and Chief (Mrs) Janet Omotogor Ibru, Ibru is the second of seven children.

He was educated in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, qualifying as an architect from the Nottingham School of Architecture, England in 1962.

Ibru ran for the governorship of newly created Delta State on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1991 and was sworn in on January 2, 1992 during the General Ibrahim Babangida military administration.

He was sacked as governor on November 17, 1993 by the late Gen Sani Abacha.
