Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni has died.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State confirmed the news of Useni’s passing on Thursday in a statement released through his director of press and public affairs Gyang Bere.
Born on February 16, 1943, the retired army general died three weeks to his 82nd birthday.
Governor Mutfwang described Useni’s death as a great loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State and the nation. He praised the late general’s leadership and dedication to public service, particularly his efforts to promote peace and security in northern Nigeria and Plateau State.
“The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, deeply regrets to announce to the citizens of Plateau State and all patriotic Nigerians, the passing of the former minister,” the statement read.
Useni’s illustrious career was highlighted in the governor’s tribute. He served as minister of transport, quarter-master general of the Nigerian Army and minister of the FCT.
After retiring from the military, Useni transitioned to politics, becoming the deputy chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later representing Plateau South Senatorial District in the Senate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.
Governor Mutfwang commended Useni for his lifetime of selfless service, noting his contributions to the military, politics and community. He lauded the late general’s compassion, generosity, and unwavering dedication to the well-being of others, emphasizing that his legacy would inspire future generations.
“On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman,” Mutfwang added.
