Former New England Patriots player, Aaron Hernandez, on Wednesday, hanged himself with a bed sheet attached to a window in his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correction Center in Shirley, Massachusetts, USA.
The body of the fallen American National Football League (NFL) star was found in his prison cell at 03:05 Eastern Time (7:05 GMT) by staff of the maximum security prison.
He was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.
The tragic act was confirmed in a statement by Massachusetts Department of Correction which read, “Lifesaving techniques were attempted on Mr. Hernandez, and he was transported to UMass Leominster, where he was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m.”
The Massachusetts State Police have begun an investigation into his death.
Hernandez, 27, was arrested in June 2013 and sentenced to life in prison in 2015 for murdering an acquaintance, Odin Lloyd, in an industrial park near his North Attenborough, Massachusetts, home.
The deceased was, on Friday, found not guilty of a 2012 murder of two Cape Verdean nationals, Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado outside a Boston nightclub.
He leaves behind his fiancée, Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, and their 4-year-old daughter, Avielle.
