The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on Wednesday re-arraigned former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sunday Ehindero and former Commissioner of Police John Obaniyi for alleged fraud of N16.4 million.
The amended 10-count charge brought before the FCT High Court sitting in Apo covers the original charge of alleged diversion of N500million donated by the Bayelsa Government to the Nigeria Police for the purchase of arms and ammunition.
ICPC said that the duo conspired and used their positions to place N500million in two fixed deposit accounts yielding an interest of N16.4 million.
The prosecutor told the court that the accused committed the offences from May 2006 to November 2006, contravening Sections 26(1) and 22(5) of the ICPC Act, 2000.
Ehindero and Obaniyi pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Counsel to the accused Kenneth Onorun and Samuel Obairko prayed the court to uphold the bail granted to them when they were first arraigned.
They objected to the prosecutor’s application for the court to proceed with evidence by a prosecution witness who the prosecutor said was ready to testify.
The defence counsel said that the statements of the accused were not served along with the amended charge.
Justice Sylvanus Orji directed the prosecutor to serve the defence counsel with the statements, adjourning the case until January 8 for hearing.
